The Basics
Hi, My name is Jasmine Ford and I grew up in a small tourist town in southeast Wisconsin called Lake Geneva. I am currently finishing my undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin ⎻ Eau Claire where I am majoring in communications and minoring in sociology. Though I'm not sure precisely what I want to do for a career in the future, I know that I need to be helping people communicate better and manage conflict in healthier ways. I have toyed with working in Human Resources for an organization and writing workplace communication training programs, and I have also considered becoming some type of counselor.
My Research
As part of my schoolwork and preparation for graduate school, I have the amazing opportunity to do undergraduate research with a mentor of my choice. I have chosen to work with Dr. Kris Knutson, and we will be researching intergenerational transmission, focusing on communication behaviors within families and trauma associated with familial experiences. I will be starting an autoethnography to start with, potentially expanding my project to include interviews. At this point in the project, we have started looking at literature and developing research questions that I can apply to my own experiences with intergenerational transmission within my family. Intergenerational transmission (IGT) refers to the processes of communication patterns that pass from generation to generation. My mentor and I are exploring how this process affects the IGT of trauma and the relationship between attitudes surrounding mental health and IGT. Our end goal is to find solutions that break the cycle of IGT as it pertains to unhealthy communication patterns. This project will span two years, and I hope to present at several different research conferences during that time.
Extracurriculars
Outside of school, I enjoy many different hobbies and I currently work 3 jobs. I am a part-time Aldi Associate, and I have two campus jobs. I work in the financial aid offices of Blugold Central, and I am in a student leadership position at the University Communication Center. For my hobbies, I enjoy playing and recording music with my at-home setup, including a piano, guitar, ukulele, and recording equipment. Additionally, I like to paint, draw, crochet, and do many other crafty hobbies. Art and music used to take up most of my time in high school, and I attempt to continue using those skills when I have the time. I am also slowly growing my plant collection, with 3 different types of succulents that I have managed to keep alive so far! In the future, I hope to have time to pursue my hobbies alongside my career so I don't lose those skills!
